100 Universities, 7 regional programmes: the largest university network in the world
The Global Campus of Human Rights is an EU-funded global network of universities based on cooperation between the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC) - the network’s focal point and umbrella organisation - and seven Regional Programmes which are based in Venice for Europe, in Sarajevo/Bologna for South East Europe, in Yerevan for the Caucasus, in Pretoria for Africa, in Bangkok for Asia-Pacific, in Buenos Aires for Latin America and the Caribbean, and in Beirut for the Arab world.
This large network, whose overall composition includes 100 prestigious universities, is the largest university network in the world specialised on human rights and democracy issues. Its partners are renowned worldwide for their leading role in education, research and advocacy in human rights and democratisation.
The key actors in the network are:
- The European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC). EIUC is the hub of the Global Campus network and managing institution of the European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation (EMA);
- The Universities of Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Bologna (Italy) coordinating the European Regional Master`s Programme in Democracy and Human Rights in South East Europe (ERMA);
- The State University of Yerevan (Armenia) coordinating the Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation in the Caucasus (CES);
- The University of Pretoria (South Africa), coordinating the Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA);
- The University of Mahidol (Bangkok, Thailand), coordinating the Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation in Asia Pacific (APMA);
- The University of San Martin, (Buenos Aires, Argentina), coordinating the Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation in Latin American and the Caribbean (LATMA);
- The University of Saint Joseph (Beirut, Lebanon), coordinating the Arab Master’s Programme in Democracy and Human Rights (ARMA).
The benefits of such a diverse and regionally focused network are multiple. For students, all the EIUC /GC participating universities together present a richness and variety of perspectives on human rights that no single department or faculty could offer. For professors and experts, who devote their time and expertise to this common endeavour, the cooperation brings insight and inspiration, which in turn enriches the participating institutions. Their experience in working together on curriculum development, teaching methodology, student selection and evaluation, and even the awarding of degrees, marks a unique example of global inter-university cooperation.
