Venezia 74: "Downsizing" opens the Film Festival

The first Press Conference of Biennale Cinema 2017 started with the presentation of the Jury and the programme of Venezia 74 that opened with the movie Downsizing - screenplay of Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, with Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau and Kristen Wig - on 30 August 2017.

"I make comedies, and this idea came from my co-writer Jim Taylor and his brother musing about how much better people could live if they were able to shrink—how big their houses could be in such little space, how cheap food would be, and so on. When I proposed to Jim that we treat the idea as a panacea for over-population and climate change, the premise soon revealed itself as a marvelous prism through which we could look at many things that interest, amuse and disgust us about the modern world. Now I’ve said too much", as stated the Director Alexander Payne.

Our world is over populated, what could it happen if some scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall and propose a 200-year global transition from big to small? Norwegian scientists of Downsizing know how to do it and some people start thinking about how could it be much further with money, if they will be miniaturised...

All the members of the cast and crew of the movie emphasised the importance of the climate change subject, as one of the world priorities in line with the Global Goals. During the Press Conference they talked about diversity, human rights activism, how to embrace the other, hospitality; Hong Chau, the actress that plays as the vietnamese activist woman in the movie, said: "All these important subject for humanity were addressed in a very hilarious manner with a touch of sense of humor that makes us reflect without entering into dramas". Matt Damon, as actor also known for his political views, made clear statement about the importance of learning how to live together.
