ALDE - EIUC Conference: United we stand in defense of Human Rights
United we stand in defense of Democracy, Human Rights and Rule of Law - The European Union’s and the international community’s response to current challenges
The conference, inaugurated today - 28 March 2017, with Angelika Mlinar, Member of the European Parliament and ALDE, Dzidek Kędzia and Manfred Nowak, President and Secretary General of EIUC, aimed at emphasising the common threat that both the EU and other international organisations system are facing. The discussion focused on the EU external action.
The chief question addressed is what it takes for the EU to create an alliance to defend the values it professes. To this end, we analysed in particular the impact the EU will have on its Member States on the one hand and on the international plane.
The first panel focused in more general terms on the space between arts. 2 and 7 TEU including the variety of EU instruments (i.e. funding, legislation, new governance initiatives) and finally the Rule of Law Framework and art. 7 TEU. The panel examined the potential to make these last two instruments functioning mechanisms and not a toothless tiger.
The second panel focused on the EU’s potential to build or join global alliances for these values, examining at the same time whether the existing actors dispose of the capacity necessary to uphold and promote these values.
