The European Inter-University Centre of Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC) says goodbye to Marco Pannella, Italian Human Rights Activist, that died on 19 May 2016 in a Rome clinic.

Giacinto Pannella (Marco) [2 May 1930 - 19 May 2016] was the historic leader of the Radical Party in Italy. He was also a member of the European Parliament between 1979 and 2009, where he sat as a full member in the Committee on Legal Affairs, in the Committee on Budgetary Control, in the Delegation for relations with Israel, and he was the President of the Nonviolent Radical Party.

"Over the years, he has been engaged in Italy in the defence of civil rights as well as against the public financing of political parties and against corruption of Italian politics. Since the 1970s, Pannella has promoted a series of referendums on themes ranging from social to political issues, in particular on those relating to the legality of the State, the rule of law and to the administration of justice".
