EIUC Visiting Scholar in June 2009: Dr. Gerd Oberleitner (University of Graz)
Dr. Gerd Oberleitner from the University of Graz was the EIUC Visiting Scholar in June 2009.
He used his stay at the monastery to continue work on a book project on human rights in armed conflict. While it is now largely acknowledged that international human rights law applies in armed conflict, the consequences remain uncertain and disputed on the conceptual as well as on the operational level. In revisiting the law of armed conflict from a human rights perspective and mapping recent developments, the book seeks to explore the potential impact of increasingly using human rights norms alongside international humanitarian law on the conduct of hostilities and the protection of civilians, as well as the repercussions of this development for both human rights and international humanitarian law.
Dr. Oberleitner is Lecturer at the Institute of International Law and International Relations at the University of Graz, member of the European Training and Research Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Graz and was a Lecturer in Human Rights in the MSc Human Rights Programme at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and Visiting Fellow at the LSE’s Centre for the Study of Human Rights.
