Expert meeting: Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty
On 25 October 2016, the United Nation Secretary General welcomed the selection of EIUC Secretary General, Manfred Nowak, by the United Nations High Level Task Force composed of the Special Representatives of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children and for Children and Armed Conflict, OHCHR, UNODC, UNICEF, UNHCR, and the Committee on the Rights of the Child.
Meetings with member states were held in Geneva and New York in November 2016 and January 2017 to request political and financial support for the Study. Meetings of similar nature had been held since 2014 by the NGO coalition and the SRSG-VAC in her role as Chair of the UN High Level Task Force. Letters have also been addressed to a number of private foundations requesting support for the Study.
The main objective of the expert meeting (at EIUC premises on 13-14 March 2017) is to gather all actors involved in the development of the Global Study, and discuss the best way to move forward with the aim of presenting a final report to the General Assembly at its seventy-third session (October 2018), as requested by GA resolution 71/177.
