Global Campus Exchange of Lecturers: Sarajevo and Pretoria

In the framework of the Global Campus Exchange of Lecturers, the Master’s Programme in Human Rights & Democratisation in Africa (HRDA) together with the European Regional Master’s Programme in Democracy and Human Rights in South East Europe (ERMA) will host the joint lecture ''Comparative Transitional Justice: Retributive and Restorative Approaches '', which will take place on 29 and 30 June 2017 at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, replicating the lecture in Sarajevo at the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of the University of Sarajevo on 16 and 17 May 2017.

The course examines the transitional justice theory and practice from a comparative perspective. It starts by introducing students to some of the central concepts and debates in the field, focusing in particular on the genealogy, mechanisms, and critiques of transitional justice. It then compares and contrasts two models of transitional justice – retributive and restorative – by drawing on South Africa and the Balkans as case studies.

The course will be led by Mr Tshepo Madlingozi, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria and Dr Iavor Rangelov, Assistant Professorial Research Fellow, London School of Economics and Political Science.
