Global Campus holds International Human Rights and Democracy Conference in Buenos Aires

The 2016 Global Campus of Human Rights annual international conference was hosted by the International Centre for Political Studies of the University of San Martin (CIEP-UNSAM) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 6-7 April.  The conference “Assessing Individual Freedoms and Collective Challenges in the XXI Century” brought together members of the Global Campus Council representing a network of more than ninety universities around the world; representatives of the European Inter-University Centre on Human Rights and Democratisation, the European Union, MERCOSUR, the United Nations, and civil society organizations from Latin America, as well as members of the diplomatic and human rights community in Argentina. 

The conference was opened by the Director General of CIEP-UNSAM and President of MERCOSUR´s Parliament, Lic. Jorge Taiana; the Rector of UNSAM, doctor Carlos Ruta; Prof. Manfred Nowak, Secretary General of EIUC; and Ambassador José Ignacio Salafranca Sánchez-Neyra, Head of Delegation of the European Union in Argentina.  Among the panelist were Amerigo Incalcaterra, Regional Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; Victor Abramovich, former Member of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights; and representatives from the seven regional programmes of the Global Campus of Human Rights, based in Europe, the Caucasus, South-East Europe, Asia-Pacific, Africa, the MENA Region and Latin America and the Caribbean.  This gathering of experts from around the world provided a unique opportunity to address the particular challenges currently facing every region as well as the role of human rights education in the strengthening of human rights and democracy.

This annual event is part of the activities carried out by the Global Campus partners in order to promote education and research on human rights and democracy worldwide.
