Global Campus International Conference 2017 - “Democracy under Threat”

The Global Campus of Human Rights international conference and promotional event will be held during the week from 4 to 9 December 2017 in Pretoria featuring a film screening and discussion on African Cinema and human rights, meetings of institutional and governance structures of the Global Campus, a visual/performance art and panel discussion, a multi-disciplinary conference on contemporary and future challenges to democracy globally and the graduation of the 18th cohort of students on the Master’s degree programme in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa. The event is organised by the Global Campus of Human Rights in partnership with the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria. The conference is realised thanks to the European Union.

The conference on 7 December seeks to review and reassess the direction of democracy in the last few decades. Is there a direction to speak of? What and who informs this direction? Should we keep attempting to objectively measure democratic gains and losses? What should inform the measurement?
Presentations at the conference may deal with, but are not limited to, these questions under the following sub-themes:

  • democracy and the realisation of socio-economic rights;
  • mis/dis/information and democracy;
  • populism in the democratic space.
