Global Campus Visual Contest: Awarded photos and video 2017

This year’s Global Campus of Human Rights visual contest was devoted to memory and reconciliation: its narratives, its traumas, its unexpected triumphs.

The winners of the Contest were announced by the Chair of the Global Campus, Prof. Veronica Gomez, during the Graduation Ceremony of the European Master in Human Rights and Democratisation on 24 September in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice to an audience of around 500 people composed of academics and representatives of EU, International organisations Alumni and students coming from different parts of the world.

We received great photos and videos from students, Alumni, professional and amateur photographers and video-makers from all over the world. Congratulations to all our winners!

The winner of the professional category is the picture “Shakira” by Maja Nydal Eriksen. In this picture, the protagonist –who has named herself “Shakira”— is one of the estimated 150,000 unregistered Roma in the suburb of Giulesti Sarbi, where there was no recognition of her rights to social security and education. The old train station where the picture is set, was one of her many alternative and dangerous playgrounds. A few months after the picture was shot, Shakira moved to Western Europe with her family.

The winner of the amateur category is “Mothers of Ayacucho” by Diego Lantero. In the picture, the Ayacucho mothers gather –like every Sunday— in a desolate sanctuary to remember their loved ones, who are among the 15.000 disappeared persons during the conflict between the Peruvian State and the Maoist group Sendero Luminoso.

The winner of the video category is “Masi's Law” by Adam Jacobi Moller. This is a short documentary about street justice in a township outside of Cape Town in South Africa where the scars left by Apartheid still translate into weakness or absence of justice and law enforcement institutions, and citizens themselves impose law and order with unexpected paths to reconciliation.

Finally, the photo “Unrecognized nation, forgotten war” by professional photographer Emanuele Amighetti –about the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh—has been awarded a Special Mention and the opportunity of a two-week trial period in FABRICA –the communication research centre based in Treviso, Italy.
