Seminar of the Chaïm Perelman Foundation at EIUC: “Philosophy of democracy and human rights”

On 10-14 November 2014, the Chaïm Perelman Foundation of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) organises a seminar titled “Philosophy of democracy and human rights”. Professor Guy Haarscher, National Director of the European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation (E.MA) conduct this seminar at the EIUC premises in the monastery of San Nicolò in Venice Lido.

The seminar focused on the beginning and gradual development of democracy and human rights in Christianity and Judaism. The traditional history of human rights is a history starting in antiquity and developing in the age of enlightenment and the twentieth century.

The seminar will look at issues such as political and civil rights philosophy and social rights philosophy and will aim at enhancing the understanding of contemporary conflict between democracy and human rights.

This seminar on the Philosophy of democracy and human rights tackles the following interesting and sensitive issues:

1. Athènes : la démocratie sans les droits de l’homme. Une inspiration pour aujourd’hui (David Van Reybrouck) ?
2. De Jérusalem aux Lumières : la lente et sinueuse genèse des droits de l’homme.
3. Droits civils, politiques et sociaux. Le marxisme est-il vraiment mort ? Problème de la « démocratie totalitaire (Talmon).
4. Y a-t-il une démocratie européenne ?
5. Droits de l’homme et démocratie sont-ils compatibles ? L’exemple américain.
6. Critiques philosophiques de la démocratie et des droits de l’homme : sont-ce toujours nos valeurs politiques fondamentales ?
