FOCUS ON: MHRD, Master of Human Rights and Democratisation (Asia Pacific)
Students in the 2013 – 2014 cohort of the Master of Human Rights and Democratisation (Asia Pacific) (MHRD) are midway through their Regional Semester, which is run each year from January to June. Our students travel to one of four countries across South and South East Asia to immerse themselves at one of our partner universities: Universitas Gadjah Mada (Indonesia), the Kathmandu School of Law (Nepal) and the University of Colombo (Sri Lanka) and Mahidol University (Thailand).
Next year, students will also have the opportunity to select Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. During their regional semester students focus their learning on the regional human rights perspectives through two compulsory coursework subjects. They also embark upon either a dissertation or internship stream to complete their degree. Students also have the opportunity to participate in incredible field trips, excursions and intensive learning, as organised by their partner university. For example in February 2014, students at Mahidol University were taken to the foothills of northern Thailand, Chiang Mai, to meet with farmers and learn about agrarian reform and land rights close to the Thailand-Burma border.
