World Children's Day 2020: Message of Manfred Nowak

On this #WorldChildrensDay, our Secretary General Manfred Nowak is in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), teaching all week at the PhD School of the Center for Human Rights, Addis Ababa University.
On 17 November, he also attended the National Launch of the Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty.

The national launch starkly reminded us that one of the most overlooked violations of the rights of children is the deprivation of liberty. Although the Convention says deprivation of liberty can only be a measure of last resort, there are still more than 7 million children locked up in for example institutions, in the criminal justice system and in migration related detention.
So, on this significant day for the rights of children, let us not forget that depriving children of their liberty, means depriving them of their childhood.
